Silverton

Animas Forks Ghost Town, vicinity of Silverton

Silverton is located south of Ouray on the southern end of Red Mountain Pass.  It is well-known as the one end of the Durango to Silverton train trip After visiting Silverton by car, we discovered much more.

One of the most interesting things about Silverton is what's not in Silverton -- the Animas Forks Ghost Town.

Those who have taken the Durango to Silverton train are familiar with the Animas Forks River, as the train follows it for most of the journey.  At Animas Forks, the Animas River is but a small stream.

The road to Animas Forks is very rocky, but scenic.  We drove it in a passenger car, but a 4-wheel drive vehicle would have been much better.  4-wheel drive vehicles are required to go beyond Animas Forks.  Although the trip is not very far, it is slow, so allow at least an hour each way.

Silverton is known for shopping.  We have visited K & C Traders (right), the only source of Astorite, for two consecutive years.  In 2011, the owner saw my difficulty in walking and immediately got me a stool upon which to sit.  When we walked in the door in 2012, he immediately recognized us and offered to get the stool for me again.  There was a small seat in his showroom, so I used it, instead.  The owner treated us like valued customers and didn't push us to buy anything (although we did -- both times).  You'll love the absolute beauty of his jewelry, a making this a "don't miss it."

The Old Hundred Gold Mine Tour was well worth the time and money.  It's located just out of town (opposite end from Million Dollar Highway).  The road turns to gravel, but it's well maintained and an easy drive.  It's only a few minutes from downtown.

We weren't sure if this would be a kid's attraction, a rip-off, or both.  It was definitely not a rip-off, and was enjoyed by all ages.  The tour guide was a retired miner, so he knew what he was talking about.  It was fascinating to see the mine from the inside of the mountain, and the miner's knowledge and explanation of how things worked brought the mine to life.  He operated some of the equipment so we could see (and hear) what went on in the mines.  They offer a great photo-op (see inset) -- no, we weren't running the tools.  They had a plastic chair for handicapped people ... they were very thoughtful and accommodating.

Handlebars had been recommended to us by a very good friend.  We weren't disappointed.  They were very busy -- it's a popular place.  The owner was very cordial, the service was good, and the food was delicious.

This must have been a haunted house, as figures appeared briefly in the windows and disappeared.  Even stranger, they looked just like our daughter and son-in-law!
