CO -- Scenery -- County Roads

The San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway is one of the most beautiful parts of Colorado.  A 233 mile loop in SW Colorado, we arrived on 9/30 -- typically a little late for the turning of the Aspen, but just right for this particular year.  Aspen trees turn bright gold and then orange as they lose their leaves, and the beauty must be seen to be appreciated.

We started our trip in Durango and went clockwise through the circle, ending back up in Durango, where we took the Durango/Silverton train on our last day of our 6-day adventure.

CR-5

  2012
CR-5 is a very unique road, in that it starts out as a typical country road with beautiful Aspen trees on it (see upper left).  Suddenly, the world opens up into majestic mountains and valleys (see upper center).  These pictures are not necessarily in order, as we were taking them with multiple cameras.
What a place for a picnic!  (Parking area, just prior to the "sign" designating the upper area.)

The picture to the upper left is the "sign" of worse terrain ... don't proceed if it's muddy, and be aware the roads get very narrow.  We were told in 2011, by a man who was waiting on a tow truck, not to go up that road unless we had 4-wheel drive, as he had lost traction and was afraid he was going to fall off the side of the mountain.  We didn't.  In 2012, it was drier, and we were told we'd have no problem as long as we turned around at the farm just past the meadow, as you're going down the other side of the hill.  We did just that and had no trouble whatsoever.  We also saw amazing scenery that we missed in 2011.  Our worst problem was getting the cows to move out of our way!
See the deer?
